TOURISM PROMOTION AND EDUCATION IN NIGERIA & AFRICA: TIDA & TEDA

TOURISM PROMOTION: TOURISM INNOVATION & DEVELOPMENT ADVANTAGE (TIDA) 2019

Early this year, I had the privilege of being a panelist during the Tourism Innovation and Development Advantage (TIDA) conference hosted by Skyview Communications.

The panel was on “Showing different innovations and technology to drive tourism education, promotion and sustenance in Nigeria and Africa”. Each of us spoke about how we use technology to promote Tourism Development in Nigeria.

I spoke on how I use virtual summit to create awareness about the Business of Tourism and promote entrepreneurship in the Travel space. Funmi Oyatogun spoke about how she designs digital maps and social media to tell stories to promote Tourism. Fisayo Olayinka-Bello talked about how she uses YouTube to promote Tourism Development in Nigeria. Chima Ezekoye of WeMove talked about how their digital platform helps to integrate the various value chains in the Tourism industry.

It was a very insightful panel. See pictures below.

TOURISM EDUCATION: TOURISM ENTREPRENEUR DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY (TEDA)

About two months ago, I enrolled for an entrepreneurship training with Tourism Entrepreneur Development Academy (TEDA) organized by Skyview Communication. The Academy trains entrepreneurs in the hospitality, travel and tourism industry to develop strategies for branding their business.

It was an intensive and very insightful training. I enjoyed how unconventional it was because we had to attend different classes at different venues. We were directed to attend classes at some of the facilitators’ offices as part of our field work.

This week I attended my graduation ceremony and joined the first set of the TEDA Alumni, Class of 2019 *winks*

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM: TOURISM PROMOTION AND EDUCATION

Why does Tourism matter? Tourism plays an important role in national development and generating of foreign revenue. It is a major source of employment, national income (Gross Domestic Product), income to the tourism promoters and the tourism destinations and a catalyst for socio-economic development of communities.

United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has positioned Tourism in the 2030 Agenda of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

One of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that promotes Tourism Development is SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth. The SDG 8 has two targets that helps with Tourism Promotion and Education:

  • Target 8.6 – Promote Youth Employment, Education and Training
  • Target 8.9 – Promote Beneficial and Sustainable Tourism

Having platforms like Skyview Communications help with Tourism promotion and education would go a long way with developing the industry in Nigeria and Africa.
